St Peters Church Yaxham
St Peters Church
Yaxham St Peter is one of the 124 Norfolk churches built in the round tower structure that still exist, as is the church of St Peter and St Paul in Repps with Bastwick. An easily recognisable feature in most of these churches is their stone construction round-shaped main towers. The churches that have this type of shape and flint type stone material construction are usually located in places where they lack natural sources of more traditional building stone, therefore they used the flint based stone building materials. Knapped flint stones were too difficult to use for constructing buildings in the standard rectangular manner, so the workers opted for round, thick tower walls instead that could be more easily formed with flint stone. In addition, the churches are situated where raids from enemies of the church usually occurred and the thick round tower walls provided a better defensive position that the more common thinner church walls. Unfortunately, the towers were not particularly useful in defending the churches as in the most part they were too short to provide an adequate defense against enemies, for example marauding Vikings.
St Peters Church in Yaxham is a beautiful and historic landmark that has been an integral part of the village’s community for centuries. The church is dedicated to St Peter, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, and its origins can be traced back to the 11th century. The church has undergone several renovations and expansions over the years, with the most significant changes taking place in the 14th and 15th centuries.
The architecture is a mix of styles, reflecting the different periods of its construction. The tower, which stands at an impressive height, is a prime example of Norman architecture, with its sturdy stone walls and small, rounded arches. The nave and chancel were both rebuilt in the 15th century, showcasing the popular Gothic style with its pointed arches and intricate carvings. The interior of the church is equally as impressive, with beautiful stained glass windows, ornate woodwork, and a grand rood screen.
One of the most fascinating features of St Peters Church is its collection of medieval wall paintings. These paintings, which were common in churches during the Middle Ages, depict scenes from the Bible and provide a glimpse into the religious beliefs and practices of the time. The paintings have been carefully restored and are a testament to the skill and craftsmanship of the artists who created them.
