Hunsett Windmill on River Ant listed building

Pictured on many Norfolk PostCards the Red Brick Hunsett Mill

Hunsett Windmill is located one mile North of Barton Broad, in Norfolk on the east side of the River Ant. The Windmill is 1.2 miles south-west of Stalham. The Hunsett Drainage Wind Pump Mill was constructed back in 1860 right on the River Ant, and used to be operational with two scoop wheels. The tower and building are now protected as the mill is classed as a listed building. The Mill tower has a white boat-type cap, four patent sails, fantail, wheel, tailpole and striking chain. The sails, along with the Mill house, were reconstructed in 1970, and the Mill is now owned privately. More recently the one sail was damaged beyond repair in the 1987 storms and had to be totally replaced and the fantail was also damaged during May of 2007.
It is rather difficult to get to Hunsett Mill however, since it has no access road nearby and is right at the North end of Norfolk Broads river system. The best method of viewing this beautiful red brick built Windmill is from a boat on the Norfolk Broads due to the difficulties of access by land. The Mill appears on many local Yarmouth and Norfolk postcards as an excellent example of the splendid landscapes visible from the Broads by boat and the general picturesque views within the Norfolk area of East Anglia. By viewing Hunsett Mill by boat you are presented with the best angle for photographing this splendid Windmill drainage pump.
